WATER SPORTS
You can’t beat the Methow Valley’s rare combination of easy access, crystal clear water, and striking scenery for a boating vacation. Whether you are coming with a motor boat or self-propelled option, there is a perfect niche for your watersport wishes.
The Methow offers both flat water and whitewater for canoeing, kayaking and rafting enthusiasts. Patterson Lake, located near Sun Mountain Lodge is a quiet, protected lake that draws water-lovers of the non-motorized breed. At the Patterson Lake Cabins, visitors can rent paddle boats, sail boats, canoes and wind-surf boards by the day and enjoy the lovely beach as well. If you are coming with your own boat, plan to put it in the water at the public access point just ½ mile south of the cabins. Patterson allows fishing, but no motor boating or jet skiing is permitted. It is a favorite cool-down swim destination on hot summer days, and you can always find a private beach by walking the Sun Mountain Trails at the far side of the Lake.
When spring runoff raises river levels, the Methow River becomes a fun and exhilarating whitewater rafting destination. The Methow River is rated class 1,2,3, and trips can be customized to meet the interests of families and groups. Raft trips can be booked through Blue Sky Outfitters. Kayakers will enjoy the Methow River as well, and many choose to explore its tributaries to get off the beaten path and into more remote sections of river. Inner-tubing the Methow river is a popular pastime on hot summer days. Tubes can be rented from Winthrop Motors, or join an Osprey tubing trip for a full-service excursion. Visit Winthrop Mountain Sports or Trails End Bookstore to pick up current river guidebooks and maps.
Pearrygin Lake is the clear choice for motor sport enthusiasts. Located just minutes from downtown Winthrop, and with several camping option including Silverline Resort and the State Park, water ski, jet ski and fishing enthusiasts can hunker down and enjoy the water, views and other recreational opportunities for days on end.
Looking for a place to take a dip after a hike or ride? Many rivers and creeks in the Valley can be accessed through public lands. Try Falls Creek or Boulder Creek up the Chewuch River Valley, stop at a roadside pullout up the Twisp River or Lost River in Mazama, or simply take your family to the public Wagner Memorial Pool at the Twisp Park. There is a kid’s shallow pool with fountains and mini-slide, and a larger slide and diving board in the main pool. And of course, there are alpine lakes too numerous to list for the most refreshing and satisfying of swims.
