The
Winthrop Snowshoe Softball tournament is a popular annual
winter-time event sponsored by the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce
and Three Fingered Jack's Saloon. Now in its third
decade, this tournament is held every February on the three-day
President's Day weekend. This year's tournament is
coordinated by Three Fingered Jack's Saloon and the Winthrop
Chamber of Commerce. The 2009 event sponsors were
the Chamber, Three Fingered Jack's Saloon and Blue Sky Realty.
On
President's weekend, up to eight out-of-town and local
coed snowshoe softball teams converge on Winthrop's ball
field for a weekend of good sport, great fun and an out
of the ordinary event - one which is enjoyed by participants
and spectators alike. |
As
the name implies, snowshoe softball is an actual softball
tournament played in the snow with the participants strapped
into snowshoes. The teams must be comprised of equal
numbers of men and women. To enable the participants
and the spectators to keep track of the action, all of
the balls are florescent yellow.
The
softballs are not the only things colorful. Some teams
don costumes in addition to their snowshoes, making Winthrop
Snowshoe Softball much, much more than just another softball
competition. This is downright hilarious and entertaining
for all ages! |

Imagine the tournament participants leaping for a fly-ball, fielding
a grounder, tagging a runner or sliding into home plate in the
snow, in costumes and wearing snowshoes!
