Winthrop is an major cross-country skiing location, with over 120 miles of groomed trails that extend toward the nearby town of Mazama. Mazama is 13 miles (21 km) northwest of Winthrop and about 28 miles (45 km) from the Canadian border.

A smokejumper base is also nearby, located between Winthrop and the nearby town of Twisp.
